My First Allan Salmon(2005)

Having read the 2004 fishing reports I was very upbeat about the prospects for my first years membership on the river Allan. However as I have now learned (the hard way) Salmon fishing is very rarely predictable. By the end of September all I had to show for my considerable efforts was a couple of “good pulls” a small sea trout and a couple of brownies. In fact I had almost resigned myself to it being a blank season (one to put down to experience) It was mid October and I had just started fishing the pool below keepers. I was edging my way down towards the spot where I knew there was an large underwater rock, a likely taking spot I thought to myself, and sure enough I felt a slow long pull and when I lifted my rod it was solid. 20 minutes later I had a beautiful cock salmon around 10lb beached on the bank, no mean feat as I was only fishing a 9ft trout rod with 8lb leader. I had decided at the start of the season that I would put my first salmon back and as I watched it glide into the depth I remembered a saying that an old fisherman had said to me once “there is no glory in salmon fishing” nobody saw me catch it, I had no pictures to prove I caught it, just a sore arm from my battle and the memory of a fantastic first Allan salmon.

HERE IS A REPORT FROM
NEIL MENNEER
OF AN OUTING ON FRIDAY EVENING ON THE 17th SEPT 2004.

I WAS OUT FOR A COUPLE OF HOURS ON FRIDAY EVENING AROUND ASHFIELD WHEN THE CONDITIONS WERE VERY GOOD, WITH PLENTY OF WATER THOUGH VERY COLOURED. I HAD A GOOD PULL WHICH CAME TO NOTHING WHEN I LIFTED INTO IT, AND THEN HALF A DOZEN CASTS LATER ANOTHER SOLID TAKE AND THANKFULLY THE FISH WAS ON. AFTER A GOOD FIGHT I LANDED A SLIGHTLY COLOURED COCK SALMON (AROUND 8lbs) WHICH I RETURNED. THE FLY WAS A SILVER BODIED ONE INCH TUBE. I MET ONE OTHER FISHER WHO COMMENTED THAT HE HAD, HAD NO LUCK AND FELT THAT THE FISH HAD ALL GONE THROUGH WITH THE RAIN.
EVEN THOUGH THE CONDITIONS WERE JUST RIGHT IN MY VIEW I PACKED IT IN AT THAT POINT FEELING VERY HAPPY.

NEW MEMBER JOHN CUMMINGS HAD A GOOD DAY ON SATURDAY 17th JULY 2004.
USING A 10ft TROUT ROD 6lb LEADER AND A CAST OF SIZE 10 SEA/TROUT FLIES.
HE LANDED TWO GRILSE (SEE-PICTURE)AND LOST ANOTHER, AT A POOL IN BRIDGE OF ALLAN.

A REPORT FROM MEMBER W.PARK INCIDENTLY NO RELATION TO RONNIE PARK ALTHOUGH THEY BOTH CAUGHT THEIR FISH ON THE SAME DAY.

I caught a cracking sea trout the same day as Ronnie Park got his 15lb salmon
it was just over the 6lb mark. This might be the sea trout that was said to be around 7lb.
I got it with a single brambling worm on a size 14 hook, the next again week I had another 3
one at 4lb and 2 around the 2lb mark I lost a lot as I always strike my fish right away so I can return them.
I've not had the chance to go back but will be soon. My friend had 2 nice grilse on the fly
2 weeks ago near the Railway pool on a small shrimp fly they had sea lice on them.
